Captain Jay “Pigpen” Matzko was raised in Phoenix, Arizona. He was commissioned from the last class with a real Plebe year in 1993 from the United States Naval Academy, where he earned a B.S. in Computer Science and a minor in French. He was designated a Naval Aviator in 1996. He holds a Master of Science in Systems Engineering from Johns Hopkins University and an Executive MBA from the Naval Postgraduate School. Jay’s operational assignments were with VAQ-128 as a Junior Officer, VAQ-136 as a Department Head and VAQ-132 as Executive Officer and Commanding Officer.

Shore tours included U.S. Naval Test Pilot School graduation, VX-23 Test Pilot and Project Officer, Chief of Naval Air Forces Airborne Electronic Attack Readiness Officer and PMA265 IPT lead and Deputy Program Manager. Just prior to his current assignment he was the PEO (T) Chief of Staff for RADM Mike Moran, a position he held until October 2017.

Pigpen is currently the Military Ranges Director for NAVAIR and a test pilot for VX-31. CAPT Matzko has accumulated more than 3,000 hours in 25 different aircraft and more than 250 carrier landings. His awards include many of the same awards that you all have earned in your Naval careers.

So why do I want to be treasurer? Two reasons; one, Joe Moreno said that no one had thrown their hat in the ring yet. Two, and more importantly I feel it is time for me to give back to the class and the institution with whom and where we spent our formative years. Not only is it time, but I am in a place in my career where I can devote the appropriate amount of time and attention to the office. Thank you to all of the class officers who have gone before, and I thank you for your consideration.

Please vote for me if you like, and if you don’t that’s okay too…
In any case, Carpe Diem!
