Class President Reunion Update: 20 Jan 2018

Hello ’93:

We have signed contracts for room blocks at two hotels (DoubleTree & Crowne Plaza) thanks to Amy Garwood (wife of our classmate, Casey) and Dan Morio ’91 of

– Both hotels are near the Westfield Annapolis Mall (but they’re not within walking distance to each other; the hotels are nearly a mile apart; about a 20 min walk according to Google Maps).

– Both hotels have free parking.

I just used the DoubleTree reservation link, above, to book my room and I called the Crowne Plaza to confirm that they have our room block set up.

If you’re told that there are no more rooms available then please let me know so we can either extend the number of rooms in the block or procure additional room blocks at other hotels for ’93.

What happened with our original plans for an August reunion?

I explained why we switched reunion dates and hotels, last week, here:

We are still in the process of cancelling our Loews contract by having classmates cancel their individual reservations by visiting and pulling up their reservation with their last name and confirmation number. I have not received any details (or an invoice) from the Loews regarding the cancellation charge I mentioned in last week’s e-mail. The room rate we originally had at the Loews for August was $209/night. When we inquired about moving our room block date to September, the Lowes’ raised the rate to $359/night, which we negotiated down to $299/night (plus parking) if we added a food and beverage event too; additionally, they could only offer us a block of 50 rooms which is too few.

Why isn’t the Crowne Plaza our HQ hotel since the rooms are cheaper than the DoubleTree?

The reason we’ve chosen the DoubleTree hotel as our HQ hotel is because they could provide us with a bigger block of rooms (twice as many Crowne Plaza).

What were our HQ hotels in the past?

At our 20th reunion, our HQ hotel was the Sheraton, which is now the Crowne Plaza. At our 15th reunion, our HQ hotel was the DoubleTree. Both hotels worked out very well as HQ hotels, especially for organizing our Thursday evening no-host social in their restaurants by the lobby.

Does it really matter if I book my room at the DoubleTree or Crowne Plaza?

It could matter if we don’t book enough rooms to fulfill our contract obligations. So, I would appreciate it if you choose one of those two hotels (I’m staying at the Crowne Plaza, leading up to the reunion, and then I’ll be at the DoubleTree, Thursday – Sunday). But, to be candid, this reunion is for you. You’re paying for the best possible experience and some of you may have loyalty rewards programs at other hotels, etc. Your hotel bill and airfare will be your biggest expenses (compared to the price of the reunion tickets), so do what you enjoy. (Yeah, I know… I’m sending mixed messages.)

What if I want to book a room outside of the Thursday – Sunday dates?

If you don’t find a favorable rate outside of our room block dates then please contact Dan Morio ’91 at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. or 844-GoNavy-1 (466-2891), extension 91 and he will get you the best possible deal.

Carpe Diem,

PS – I’ve received more feedback from my e-mail to the class, last week, than any other e-mail I've sent. Virtually every single message was supportive and gracious. Thank you for your patience and understanding.

PPS – Don't hesitate to let me know if you have any questions about the hotels. Tomorrow (Sunday) the reunion committee is meeting to confirm our schedule of events which should be the same as our last reunion.
